Summer is getting closer every day, and that means more time outdoors enjoying the bounty and beauty of nature! We are so lucky to have such a spectacular Earth to explore and care for, so naturally (haha, get it?) many people have written gorgeous songs celebrating it. For my May playlist, I've gathered some of my favorite songs from some of my favorite artists, all designed to get you feeling nature's healing energy and joy.

1. Take Me Home, Country Roads (Peter Hollens feat. Adam Chance)
Why you’ll love this:
This karaoke staple celebrates the wonders of America’s natural beauty, taking the listener on a road trip across captivating landscapes with a toe-tapping groove that’s sure to bring a smile to your face. Peter and Adam’s clear love for the outdoors shine through in their joyful delivery of this heartwarming tune.
There are times where it can feel as if the entire world is against us, and that we’re alone and isolated from the things that bring us joy. This gentle lullaby reminds us that a loving connection to another person keeps us tethered to our best selves and our favorite feelings. When you listen to The Hound + The Fox’s gentle vocals and soft ukulele playing, you’ll feel that warmth and peace you feel when hugging a loved one as you sway gently back and forth.
This eulogic ballad captures the pensive, thoughtful feelings of a person who’s lost a dear friend. While the melody is beautiful, the lyrics are reflective and somber. Much like nature itself, the very best music joins beauty and cruelty together, and this song is no exception. Home Free always lets Rob take the solos for the emotional songs, and it’s no wonder why - listening to them sing together, you’ll feel the pain of grief, but also the healing calm of their beautiful harmonies.
A timeless Beatles classic, “Here Comes the Sun” speaks to the peace that comes right after the darkest of night has passed. The gentle, affirmational performance by Lauren Ruth Ward is sure to delight the senses and bring light to whomever hears it, come rain or shine.
5. Somewhere Over the Rainbow (Evynne Hollens)
Why you’ll love this:
This is one of the most well known songs in the world, and with good reason. It’s a song about hope - that the bad times will one day be over. The lyrics use the beautiful imagery of nature to elicit a feeling of soothing calm - the feeling of safety and relaxation you feel from listening to a lullaby.
6. What a Wonderful World (Brooklyn Duo)
Why you’ll love this:
Popularized by jazz legend Louis Armstrong, “What A Wonderful World” has been featured in countless films and television shows since its release in 1967. Its evocative lyrics and approachable melody have given it a broad appeal, touching the hearts of listeners in countries the world over. This version by Brooklyn Duo takes the song a step further, expressing the song’s sentiments through emotional piano and cello playing. In doing so, they touch on the song’s hidden truths - ones that words alone couldn’t describe.
7. Oceano (Nathan Pacheco)
Why you’ll love this:
This nuanced piece combines bright, worldly orchestral textures with the bold, cinematic vocal stylings of Nathan Pacheco. With twists and turns as common as waves in the ocean tide, “Oceano” will transport you to a sandy beach on a breezy afternoon - light and joyous, yet peaceful and not without a bit of mystery.
8. Edelweiss (GENTRI)
Why you’ll love this:
Originally appearing in the Broadway musical The Sound of Music,“Edelweiss” is the final song written by legendary lyricist Oscar Hammerstein II. Fittingly, the song serves as a farewell to a place called home, using the imagery of the Edelweiss flower to represent the country of Austria, a place of great significance to Captain von Trapp, a prominent character in the show. GENTRI’s compelling cover provides an honest, harmonically diverse interpretation of the piece, melding lilting melodies and jubilant harmonies with energizing instrumentation bound to draw you to an open field with song in your heart.
9. Circle of Life (BYU Vocal Point)
Why you’ll love this:
At its core, this song is about being overwhelmed by the immense splendor of our Earth. “There’s far too much to take in here, more to find than could ever be found.” And yet, we are all involved in it - a part of it. We need not see or understand the whole in order to be part of the whole. BYU Vocal Point’s voices blending together create a similar feeling - one where the whole is greater than the sum of all its parts.
