Exalted by Kelly Clarkson as “incredibly gifted” and described by Good Morning America as “the duo with music that brings hope," Mat & Savanna Shaw are a powerhouse father/daughter duo with amazing vocals and beautiful harmonies. They were kind enough to share an insider scoop about their first album, Picture This. The musical duo have been singing for years but only started releasing music videos at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020.
Savanna, eager to keep in touch with her music friends, started a music social media account. Normally a shy and private teenager, she was nervous to sing her first song by herself, so she asked her dad to join her in singing “The Prayer”.
After that first video, recorded only using an iPad, went viral, Mat and Savanna continued releasing duets on social media and streaming platforms, with singles charting in both the US and UK. They quickly garnered a worldwide following that resulted in over a half million YouTube subscribers.
Released on October 23rd, 2020, Picture This debuted at #1 on the iTunes Pop Chart. The duo has since taken the #1 spot on multiple Billboard music charts. We are thrilled to get to share the amazing perspective of Mat and Savanna with you in this quick interview.
How did you decide on the name for your CD?
It is named after our first original song, Picture This! This is a song that tells our story, and aims to inspire others to follow their dreams!
What is your favorite track on the CD and why is it your favorite?
That is a tough one because we have several favorites. But I can narrow it down to two. The Prayer and Picture This. The Prayer because that is where it all started for us. When Savanna asked me to come in from doing yard work to join her on her first social media post, I had no idea what that would mean for us. And the message for the song is so appropriate for our world today. It is a simple prayer for life to be kind and for help to guide us through our struggles.
Picture This is a favorite because it’s our first original, plus it tells our story. Each of the verses tell our own story, and then the chorus is where our stories join together for a common theme.
When Savanna decided to be brave and start a music account on Instagram, neither of us knew what could happen. It took a minute of bravery, a moment believing to change our lives forever.
What is the most challenging song on the CD for you to sing?
For Savanna it is Let It Be. It is a beautiful song that we love so much, but the key is a little tricky for her. For me it would be Gone, Gone, Gone. For some reason, everytime I perform that I mess up a word, or sing the wrong part, or something. I have had some epic performing mess ups on that one. But I love singing it. It’s probably because I get lost in the music and in listening to Savanna sing it, and forget to pay attention to my own part!
What song are you most excited to sing?
The Prayer. I love how affected people seem to be by the music and message of that song. It is something special to share live.
What or who influences your music?
Luckily, Savanna and I share a similar taste in music. We both love oldies and big band jazz. We also love to sing songs that resonate with us and have a story or message to share that will inspire and uplift. Some of our favorite artists that influence our taste in music are Frank Sinatra, Michael Buble, Josh Groban, Kelly Clarkson, Garth Brooks, Tori Kelly and Taylor Swift. It’s a pretty eclectic taste.
What’s coming up next from Mat & Savanna?
We are working on our third album now that is set to release in late spring! A lot of the songs have come as suggestions from our fans, and our Patreon supporters atTheShawFam.com. We love our ShawFam and all the help they give us!
Anything else you would like to share with the Legendary Vocals community?
Just a heartfelt thank you for supporting our music. We are so grateful to Peter Hollens for mentoring us and helping us become “real life” musicians. We could not (and I say this with all sincerity) have done this without his help! #peterfans4life!
I love a cappella, it’s always been such a big part of my life. I co-founded the group On the Rocks at the University of Oregon, I met my wife through a cappella, and what really put me on the map as a creator was my arrangements and transforming popular songs into a cappella renditions! I wanted to explain kind of why we focus so much on a cappella here at Legendary Vocals and why it’s so important to me and how amazing a cappella truly is.
