St. Patrick’s Day is such a fun holiday, and as someone who has Irish heritage I wanted to share some of my favorite Irish folk songs that me or my collaborators have worked on! I hope your St. Patrick’s Day is filled with cheer, celebration, and happiness!
One of the most famous and recognizable Irish folk songs,Danny Boy is one of Peter’s favorite songs to sing ever! Peter filmed this at a beautiful winery, and the breathtaking scenery makes for the perfect setting to accompany such a moving song. The emotional backstory of a son leaving off to war is heard throughout his voice as he navigates the bittersweet feelings and tenderness thatDanny Boy is so famous for.
Down By the Salley Gardens is a passionate and sweet love song, as the message is all about reminiscing on past days with an old sweetheart. Peter’s rich harmonies layered on one another, some even sound like bells being rung, are transportative, feeling as if you've been whisked away to Ireland. This is the perfect song to listen to with the one you love on St. Patrick’s Day.
Both The Hound + The Fox and The O’Neill Sisters give an unforgettable performance ofSiúil a Rúin!McKenzie’s delicate voice fits perfectly amongst the sisters’ as all three harmonize effortlessly, and sound like a heavenly host. Accompanied by authentic Irish instruments, the bodhran and Irish flute, this arrangement feels as if you’ve been taken back in time. All five of them sing in Gaelic at one point flawlessly, making this the best song to feel that authentic connection to Irish folk music.
The O’Neill Sisters are the perfect artists to listen to this St. Patrick’s Day because they’re actually Irish! Their enchanting voices are so soft and sweet, like a gentle breeze flowing through the trees. This traditional Irish folk song of love and sorrow is heard in every nuance of their voices; from their gentle dynamics to the inflection on their harmonies, the O’Neill Sisters shine on this version.
Evynne Hollens has actually stated that this is one of her favorite videos that Peter Hollens has ever done! Peter pours his heart into this song, as its one about saying goodbye to a loved one that’s passed. The storytelling is clear in every note and layer, as he weaves a beautiful but melancholy tale of the ghost of his bride visiting his side on the night of their wedding. The music video is breathtaking and haunting all the same time, and serves as a moving reminder to love the ones you have.
